Portrait of a Man

Van Gogh Painting

The gold/yellow lighting around the person can indicate divine lighting. For instance, it’s like the person is to a higher power, e.g. God. The painting of the man looks like God, or Jesus, or maybe it’s a portrait of someone who encountered Van Gogh in his lifetime. I feel somehow more connected with religion, in particularly mine. The image reminds me of a person who is of a higher power in the Christian/Catholic part of religion. The image provides the man looking upward and perhaps is looking for hope as his eyes are soft and not filled with tension. I like the piece of work because Van Gogh used soft basic hues of color. The mood perceived in this artwork is energetic. I think the mood was created by the elements of painting. For example, the value, texture, and the space that made up the image created an outstanding work of art. The value is defined as the lightness or darkness of a HUE. The image created shadows and highlights. The dark contrast of the colors used in this image created shadows to illuminate the lightness of the portrait. Next, the texture of the painting looks rough as the colors are in layers. In the painting Van Gogh uses oil on the canvas to create this texture. Lastly, the space between the person and behind the man is used to perhaps give nothing, but our attention to what is in front of us. It is giving the audience to create a great observation/idea of the painting with just the attention of one man.
